Amrit Yoga was developed by Yogi Amrit Desai and is defined as a style of Hatha Yoga that “integrates meditative awareness with awakened prana of the body.” A combination of bodywork (Hatha) and mind work (Raja), Amrit Yoga focuses on movement and body sensations with the intention of joining the mind, body and spirit.
In his self-published book, Yogi Amrit Desai described the three stages of Amrit Yoga: The Three Stages of Amrit Yoga: 1. Willful Practice- During the first stage, you will learn to do the postures properly and without force. Movements should be slow and focused, with an emphasis on attention to detail. The stage also focuses on self-acceptance and respect of personal capabilities. 2. Will and Surrender- In the second stage, we sustain the postures for longer periods. Focusing inward, we calm our mental and emotional conflicts. “Following Desai's instruction, one can "melt, merge, and disappear" into the internal energy experience.” 3. Surrender- The spontaneous movements of this stage differentiate it from the first two stages. Our body is able to let go and guide our posture, with little to no thinking. Our body’s movements directed by prana characterize this stage.
